A location-independent concept explainer. A scramjet is an air-breathing engine with no rotating parts that flies at hypersonic speed: air is compressed by the vehicle’s own forward motion, fuel is injected into a supersonic flow, and combustion happens so fast the flow never slows below the speed of sound. That compression-by-speed is why scramjets can reach Mach 5 and beyond where turbojets cannot — and why they matter for hypersonic missiles, reusable launch and reconnaissance. The practical problems are the subject: the engine cannot start until the vehicle is already moving fast, sustained combustion in a supersonic airstream is difficult to hold, and the airframe and combustor face temperatures that will melt steel. India’s DRDO has been working the problem in ground tests at its scramjet facility in Hyderabad, where a full-scale actively cooled combustor ran for more than 1,200 seconds on 9 May 2026 — nearly double its own 700-second run in January. That is a ground milestone, not a flight one: the combustor still has to be integrated into a full propulsion system and flown, and DRDO has published no date for that.
